money to fight HIV/AIDS, scholarships

LULAC 4871 – The Dallas Rainbow Council held its third annual Pride Fiesta on May
8, attracting community members to an all-day block party that featured folkloric
performances, lip syncing performances of famous Latin music legends and talented
singers.

Around 200 people stopped by the neighborhood event that featured several booths
that showcased delicious Mexican food, local art and nonprofit organizations.

By the end of the night, the event raised $2,345 dollars for LULAC Rainbow Council’s
charities: AIDS Arms and the Jesus Chairez - LULAC 4871 Scholarship.

LULAC 4871 will donate $1,172.50 toward local HIV/AIDS service provider AIDS Arms,
which is currently expanding its clinic in the Hispanic Dallas neighborhood of Oak Cliff.
The new clinic will open this summer and will add 2,400 additional patients.

LULAC 4871 had already raised its initial $1,000 for its scholarship winner Joseph
Zuniga, a North Dallas High School graduate and business student at the University of
Texas at Austin, before the event. The $1,172.50 donated to its scholarship fund will
be divided among two runner-up candidates from Irma Rangel Young Women’s
Leadership School: Mignote Chamiso and Diney Hobgood who will graduate this June.
They plan to go into medicine.

“We are thankful that we were able to help not one, but three students this year, who
believe in equality for all,” said Garcia. “These students have great community service
and leadership in their backgrounds. Each one of them had stellar grades that made
them outstanding candidates.”

This year’s outdoor event also registered 18 people to vote and provided HIV testing
and counseling on site.
