May Update
Second Anniversary!
LULAC Council 4871 will celebrate its second anniversary at its May General
Meeting on Tuesday, May 27, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the home of LULAC Council
4871 President Jesse Garcia. His home is located at 3827 Stockton Lane, Dallas,
TX 75287 (near Frankford and Midway). The event will feature a fajita cookout, rice
and beans and beer! Members and potential new members are asked to RSVP at
LULAC 4871@aol.com so party planners can plan accordingly.
Population Milestone
Media outlet Bloomberg reported on May 1 that Hispanics in the United States
were the fastest growing segment of the population in the year ending July 2007,
according to Census Bureau statistics. Hispanic numbers in America rose 1.4
million in that year to 45.5 million in total (a 3.3 percent increase). Hispanic now
account for 15.1 percent of the U.S. population, which hovers above 301 million.
Population numbers for other minorities groups are as follows: Blacks 40.7
million, Asians 15.2 million, American Indians and Alaska Natives 4.5 million,
Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders 1 million.
Currently Hawaii, New Mexico, California, Texas and the District of Columbia have
populations that are "Majority-Minority," meaning more than 50 percent of their
population are people of color.
