December 2009: LULAC 4871 delivers meals to HIV/AIDS food pantries
On Dec. 12, LULAC 4871 participated in its district’s “Cena En El Barrio," an annual
food delivery project sponsored by North Texas LULAC District III, Tyson Foods and
the North Texas Food Bank. Rainbow Council members joined fellow LULAC
members from across the metroplex early Saturday morning to assemble 2,500
boxes of food that contained frozen poultry, canned vegetables, cake mix, bags of
rice and beans, sack of potatoes and bottled water. LULAC 4871 contributed its
allotted 150 boxes to the clients of Resource Center Dallas Food Pantry and AIDS
Interfaith Network Food Pantry.
November 2009: LULAC 4871 members help register 1,200 voters for SVREP
LULAC 4871 members Zhyla Alvarado, Chelle Simmons and Omar Narvaez spent
the majority of October and November registering voters in Irving, Grand Prairie and
West Dallas for the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project. Narvaez
helped coordinate voter drives on college campuses, in front of grocery stores and
on church sidewalks. At the end of November, he and his crew that he led
registered 1,200 voters. LULAC 4871 is very proud of Omar, Zhyla and Chelle, as
well as other LULAC 4871 who helped them on the weekends.
October 2009: LULAC 4871 helps raise $1,000 for Lifewalk
LULAC 4871, with the help of the University of Texas at Dallas Young Adult LULAC
Council, helped raise more than $1,000 for Lifewalk. Lifewalk is an annual event
that raises awareness, promotes testing and collects funds to treat people with
HIV/AIDS. The community participated in a 5K Run/Walk through Uptown Dallas on
Sunday, Oct. 11. The LULAC Team consisted of 12 members. The team joined an
estimated 10,000 people that afternoon to make a difference. Last year, the LULAC
team only raised $250. Congratulations to this year’s team that quadrupled that
amount raised and the participation of LULAC members.
September 2009: LULAC 4871 helps Telemundo star on pro-equality show
The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) called on LULAC 4871
to help set up interviews with Gay Latino youth and leaders for a segment on the
Super Latina Show hosted by Telemundo star Gaby Natale. Her weekly Wednesday
8 a.m. show, “Super Latina,” is a hit, winning her time slot in Spanish-speaking
homes throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. She wanted to focus on a show
featuring LGBT youth and their struggle. From bullying in schools, suicide risks and
the coming out process, Natale interviewed LULAC 4871 members and Gay
Latinos for her show that is carried in Texas and New Mexico. The show aired on
Sept. 23. Special thanks to Valiente President and LULAC 4871 Member Fernie
Sanchez for representing the council in the segment.
August 2009: LULAC 4871 donates school supplies to elementary
LULAC Council 4871 was successful in collecting funds and supplies for its drive
for School Year 2009-2010. This year’s beneficiary is Oscar Campos, an
elementary teacher from Mount Auburn Elementary in East Dallas. This year Mr.
Campos will teach18 students. The majority of these kids come from low-income
homes, and LULAC 4871 is proud to provide the following school supplies:
Notebooks, Boxes of Crayons, School Boxes, No. 2 Pencils, Big Pink Erasers, Glue
Sticks, Markers, Folders, Hand Sanitizer and Backpacks.
July 2009: LULAC 4871 passes resolution at National Convention
On July 18, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) general
assembly at its national convention held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, passed a
resolution calling on Congress to pass, and President Barack Obama to sign, the
Employee Non Discrimination Act (ENDA). This federal legislation would protect
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender workers from discrimination in the
workplace based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. The vote
was 925 to 1 in favor of passing a group of resolutions that included the ENDA
resolution. LULAC 4871 members Jesse Garcia, Omar Narvaez and Raul
Hinojosa attended the National Convention as delegates.
June 2009: LULAC 4871 passes resolution at State Convention
More than 400 League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) members
attended the 80th annual Texas State LULAC Convention — “Unity 09” — in Dallas
at the Hilton Lincoln Centre June 4-7. LULAC 4871 – The Dallas Rainbow Council
was represented by delegates Zhyla Alvarado, Felix Arrieta, Felix Gaytan, Bernice
Gonzalez, Chelle Simmons and Jesse Tafalla, Jr. Alternates were Jesse Garcia
and Omar Narvaez. LULAC 4871’s “Employment for All” resolution which asks
LULAC to support federal legislation that protects Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and
Transgender citizens from being discriminated in the workplace (the Employee Non-
Discrimination Act – that includes gender identity and expression) was adopted by
the Texas LULAC membership.
May 2009: LULAC 4871 awards $2,000 scholarship
LULAC 4871 - The Dallas Rainbow Council selected Molina High School senior
Jesus Montelongo of Dallas, Texas, for its first-ever scholarship. A benefit show for
Jesus was held on Sunday, May 17, at Kaliente Night Club. Owners of Kaliente
matched the amount raised by performers from tips. That amount, along with
donations before the event, brought in $2,000. Jesus, who is attending the
University of Texas at Austin this fall, received a fully-loaded Hewlett Packard Laptop
from generous donors. Special thanks to David and Loras who donated the Laptop,
plus Nicky Lauren and Alberto Rey from Kaliente for putting on the benefit.
April 2009: LULAC 4871 wins big at District Convention
LULAC 4871 – The Dallas Rainbow Council celebrated several wins at the LULAC
District III Convention held on Saturday, April 25, in Dallas. LULAC 4871 Co-founder
and former Vice President Suzanne Hickman won “Woman of the Year.” LULAC
4871 Member Constable Jaime Cortes walked away with “Man of the Year.” The
“Se Presta” Volunteer Award was given to LULAC 4871 President Jesse Garcia.
For the second year in a row, LULAC 4871 has successfully passed a pro-equality
resolution at the District Convention. With a unanimous vote, LULAC District
councils from North Texas approved a resolution calling on U.S. Congress to pass
and U.S. President Barack Obama to sign the Employment Non Discrimination Act
that would prohibit the firing of people based on sexual orientation, gender identity
or expression. Lastly, Jesse Garcia was elected LULAC District III Deputy District
Director.
March 2009: LULAC 4871 testifies before Committee on Hate Crimes
A hate crimes study bill that minority communities rallied around in February was
approved out of the Texas House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence on March
11 by a vote of eight to two. LULAC 4871 President Jesse Garcia traveled to Austin
to March 4 to testify in favor of the bill representing Texas LULAC, alongside Equality
Texas, the Anti-Defamation League and the American Civil Liberties Union. House
Bill 616, authored by State Representative Marc Veasey of Fort Worth, will require
the Attorney General to conduct a study on the effectiveness of the James Byrd Jr.
Hate Crimes Act. This bill now goes to a calendar committee so it can be
scheduled for a debate on the house floor. Since the James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes
Act became law in 2001, more than 1,800 crimes of bias and prejudice have been
reported the Texas Department of Public Safety but only nine prosecutions have
been made under this statue.

January 2010: LULAC 4871 membership drive hits 59!
LULAC 4871 closed the month with its best recruitment numbers yet. Fifty-nine
members joined the council between December 1, 2009, through January 31. We
encourage expired members to renew by our February meeting so they can be
included in the official rosters being sent to District, State and National LULAC.
New members are also encouraged to drop by our February meeting to join in
person. To become a member, please make a $35 check or money order out to
“LULAC 4871.” New members must join in person (at general meetings).
