December 2010: LULAC 4871 Delivers Meals to Non Profits:
Thanks to the Cena En El Barrio, LULAC 4871 was able to deliver meals to the
Resource Center Dallas Food Pantry, AIDS Interfaith Network Daire Center, the
Wilkinson Center, West Dallas senior center and Pleasant Grove church food
pantry. More than 250 boxes of foods (frozen chicken, fresh vegetables and canned
vegetables) were delivered on Dec. 12).
November 2010: Dallas Independent School District Passes Anti-Bullying Code:
LULAC 4871 members rallied for anti-school bullying protection in DISD schools
and saw it become part of the DISD code on Nov. 18 with a unanimous vote.
Special thanks to members who worked on the issue and spoke at the DISD
board briefing and board meeting.
October 2010: LULAC 4871, AIDS Arms Inc., host successful NLAAD event:
The Dallas Rainbow Council joined AIDS Arms Inc. to host a National Latino AIDS
Awareness Day event in Dallas on Friday, Oct. 15, in Oak Cliff's Centro de mi Salud
Center. Throughout the six-hour event, 96 Latinos of all ages and orientations
were tested. LULAC 4871 was later informed that all tested negative. Our event
was featured in Telemundo, Univision and Al Dia Newspaper.
September 2010: LULAC 4871 launches a new youth council in Oak Cliff:
The Dallas Rainbow Council sponsored a new youth council in September: The
Allstars LULAC Youth Council. Teens from Sunset, Pinkston, Townview and
Skyline High Schools are part of this new community-based council. LULAC 4871
will mentor 21 kids throughout the school year.
August 2010: LULAC 4871 holds Legal Forum with Dallas Hispanic Bar:
The Dallas Rainbow Council paired up with the Dallas Hispanic Bar Association to
present free legal workshops aimed at the Hispanic community on Aug. 21.
Information on immigration, consumer law, family law and criminal law was
presented. More than 100 people took advantage of the day-long workshop held at
Mountain View College. Special thanks to Mountain View LULAC for its help with
logistics.
July 2010: LULAC 4871 is the 2010 National LULAC Council of the Year:
The Dallas Rainbow Council won “National LULAC Council of the Year” at the
2010 National LULAC Convention held in Albuquerque, N.M., on July 12-17.
Council member Ramiro Luna won “Man of the Year." Garcia presented at an
LGBT equality session: "“Equality: LGBT, Latino LGBT and Allied Communities
Advancing Civil Rights.” Garcia and Luna also presented at an immigration rights
session: "Making a Down Payment on Change: DREAM Act." Special thanks to Ray
De Los Santos, Jesse Garcia, Ramiro Luna, Patrick McCoy, Omar Narvaez,
Sammy Nesbit Guevara and John Trevino for attending the convention.
June 2010: LULAC 4871 scores wins at Texas LULAC State Convention:
The Dallas Rainbow Council won “Texas LULAC Council of the Year” at the 2010
Texas LULAC State Convention held in Austin on June 2-6. The council also
picked up its very first statewide “Man of the Year” honor, which was awarded to
Ramiro Luna. Luna was also elected to a statewide officer position: Deputy
Director for Young Adults. “We are very honored and happy to have received these
recognitions,” said Jesse Garcia, cofounder and president of LULAC 4871, which
previously won the council of the year award in 2008. “We are a very young council,
but we are also a hard-working council. The 75 members who have worked year-
round on community service projects and activism saw their efforts rewarded by
longtime-leaders from across the state. We are humbled and motivated to do even
more.”
May 2010: LULAC 4871 member spreads message of equality nationwide:
The Dallas Rainbow Council managed to get a message of LGBT equality to the
national membership of the League of United Latin American Citizens to
participate in the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) repeal effort on May 11. LULAC 4871
member Pepe Johnson, a former Army Soldier who was discharged for being gay
because of DADT, wrote a letter to LULAC members, which was emailed to the
membership on May 7, seeking their assistance in contacting their representatives
and senators in Washington, D.C., to move forward with the repeal of DADT. We’re
very proud of Pepe and National LULAC! This message of equality and respect for
the LGBT community was sent out to every inbox belonging LULAC members who
get these weekly messages from the national office.
April 2010: LULAC 4871 wins Council and Man of the Year!
On April 10, LULAC 4871 won Council of the Year at the annual LULAC District III
convention! For the second time in our four-year history, our council has been
recognized as a leader in the North Texas community. Every member should feel
proud of our accomplishments this past year that earned us this award: promoting
the Census, feeding the hungry, registering voters, holding meetings on
Comprehensive Immigration Reform across the metroplex, advocating for civil
rights in the Texas Legislature, cleaning up parks and raising money for
scholarships. We are also happy to announce that new LULAC 4871 Member
Ramiro Luna walked away with Man of the Year. He was recognized for his tireless
work on behalf of the DREAM Act. LULAC 4871 President Jesse Garcia was re-
elected by acclamation to Deputy District Director, and Vice President for Youth
Zhyla Alvarado, who served as District Secretary, was elected as Co-Deputy for
Youth at the District Level.
March 2010: LULAC 4871 Elects New Officers
LULAC 4871 held its 2010-2011 officer elections at the March general meeting,
and the following people were elected: Jesse Garcia for president; Omar Narvaez
for vice president; Zhyla Alvarado for vice president for youth; Elias Cantu for
secretary; Bernice Gonzalez for treasurer; Chelle Simmons for sergeant at arms;
John Trevino, Jr., for parliamentarian; Patricia Mancha for chaplain. President
Jesse Garcia appointed board members at large: Arturo Rivas, Denise Rodriguez,
Felix Gaytan, Sammy Nesbit and Patrick McCoy.
February 2010: LULAC 4871 and HRC host Immigration Reform
The Human Rights Campaign and LULAC 4871 sponsored a community meeting
on Comprehensive Immigration Reform and how it affects the Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual and Transgender community on Feb. 18 at the Resource Center Dallas.
Nearly 30 community members heard keynote speaker State Rep. Rafael Anchia,
explain what a Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill could look like and
countered myths about immigrants by presenting facts and studies on immigrant
labor.
January 2010: LULAC 4871 membership drive hits 59!
LULAC 4871 closed the month with its best recruitment numbers yet. Fifty-nine
members joined the council between December 1, 2009, through January 31. We
encourage expired members to renew by our February meeting so they can be
included in the official rosters being sent to District, State and National LULAC.
New members are also encouraged to drop by our February meeting to join in
person. To become a member, please make a $35 check or money order out to
“LULAC 4871.” New members must join in person (at general meetings).
